Age 11 - 14
The Montessori approach for Middle School is a set of ideas and actions: a different way of approaching life and school experiences.
Montessori Middle School focuses on the adolescent as a social “newborn”, fragile and in need of support, but at the same time full of resources and with a strong desire to explore themselves and the world around them.
Our study program is specifically designed to meet the specific needs and characteristics of adolescents, guiding them through this delicate phase of their development with practical and meaningful experiences.
Students are encouraged to use the educational environment to build their own identity autonomously. This means that they are encouraged to become self-sufficient through personal experience, to explore, experiment and develop their manual skills both individually and in groups, without adults intervening directly, in order to promote complete and balanced personal growth.

Art
Each project emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, cooperative learning and responsibility, involving various operational and methodological tools. It also promotes active participation, freedom of expression, problem solving and the creation of a personal knowledge base.

Information Technology
The activities carried out promote problem-solving oriented towards research and constructive management of errors.
The main objectives are the conscious and correct use of digital technologies to develop computational thinking and strategic organization of data, and the understanding that digital innovations are a tool that supports and simplifies strategies to achieve objectives.
“The development of language is part of the human personality itself. Words are the natural means of expressing thought, and consequently of establishing understanding between men. If once it was enough to know a single language, today it has become indispensable to teach several.”
Maria Montessori
Intercultural English
At Montessori Como Secondary School, English is a living, everyday presence – not just a subject to study, but a language to use, communicate and experience daily.
The Enhanced English Programme includes 5 hours per week, led by a bilingual teacher trained in the UK. The school is fully committed to English as a single focus, ensuring continuous and in-depth learning.
Activities include special projects such as the Book Club and Pumpkin Day, along with collaborative work that makes the language practical, engaging and meaningful.
In addition, students take part in 3 hours of CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning), where a second native or bilingual teacher works alongside subject teachers in history, geography and science, turning curriculum content into English learning experiences.
English is present beyond the classroom as well – in break time, lunch and corridors – and is enriched through international events, themed menus and intercultural celebrations.
Each year, the school evaluates the opportunity for a study trip abroad before the start of the academic year, offering students an immersive experience with local schools, host families and a new cultural environment.
The programme is completed by cultural exchanges, Erasmus projects and the hosting of international delegations, depending on yearly opportunities.
Lunch Time
Unlike primary school, middle school students do not have specific roles during lunch, which allows them to fully focus on the convivial moment and socializing with their classmates.
Lunch takes place inside the classrooms, where students are divided into mixed groups. This encourages interaction between children of different ages and classes, helping to create an inclusive and collaborative environment. Once a week, there is also the co-presence of an English teacher, which adds an extra educational opportunity, allowing children to practice the language in an informal context.
The Environments
The Como Montessori Middle School is equipped with a soccer field, volleyball net, ping pong table, and basketball hoop, as well as a municipal gym. Students have access to a self-managed urban garden and spaces for outdoor activities and recreation. The school also offers a carpentry workshop, a multipurpose room for art and music, a library, and a computer room with Wi-Fi. In addition, there is an art workshop and a Great Hall for events and meetings.
Simona Trombetta
Pedagogical Coordinator of the Middle School
Simona Trombetta has been teaching Italian Language and Literature in lower secondary school since 2013. Fully qualified in her subject, she completed her Montessori specialization in 2015, a choice that has significantly shaped her educational approach.
In her work, she embraces the principles of the Montessori method, promoting active and mindful learning. For her, learning means developing autonomy, responsibility, and critical thinking skills, while guiding students in building a personal and reflective study method.
She strongly believes in collaboration among colleagues and in constructive dialogue with families, both essential elements of a cohesive educational community focused on students’ well-being. In her daily practice, she designs meaningful learning experiences, encourages discussion, and invites students to ask questions, supporting them as they grow with confidence, self-awareness, and an open outlook toward the future.
