EXERCISES OF PRACTICAL LIFE

Initially the work that is more enjoyable to the children has to do with environmental care and personal care. Dusting, sweeping, ironing, folding, polishing, caring for plants and small animals, cutting, pouring, threading, setting the table and clearing the table, washing dishes, washing dolls, washing clothes, buttoning, tying shoe strings, dressing and undressing, are basic activities that are aimed directly to coordinate and refine physical movements, and indirectly preparing the hand  for the movement of writing.

THE ACTIVITY OF THE CHILD

“For the child the ability to work represents a vital instinct because without work one cannot organize one’s personality: Man creates himself working”

(Maria Montessori)

The activity of the child has its own laws, pace and purposes completely diverse from those of the adult and which the adult must respect. The child doesn’t react because an action must be completed but because he/she needs to work to build himself: obeying the law of nature.  The responsibility of the adult is to give him/her “the right help” meaning: to provide him/her appropriate and limited objects.

L'INDIPENDENZA
"“Human dignity comes from a feeling of independence”
(Maria Montessori)

The child is a active personality that, thanks to the same motor activity that  led him to explore the environment and accumulate ideas in the first two, three years, must then create his autonomy and independence.  His attention must be stimulated provoking a desire – need for repetitive actions  and with these his inner formation and elaboration begins.  Using these objects he learns how to make use of them.

THE HAND - Organ of intelligence

“When man thinks, he thinks and reacts with his hand.  Everywhere there are traces of human hand and through these we can understand the human spirit and the thinking of his time”

"Grazie alle mani che hanno accompagnato l'intelligenza si è creata la civiltà"

(Maria Montessori)

The hand is the organ of intelligence, it is the tool that helps the mind to know, to comprehend the surroundings. Only if the child uses his hands can he fully develop his intelligence, having a well-balanced character, being able to obey. From the first months of life, from the first conscious movement of the hand that the child makes trying to grab and hold, there will be a continuous development towards hand-mind coordination, guided by the unconscious desire and the conscious will. The responsibility of the adult is to incent the hand activity of the child and let him  move forward towards knowledge and independence.
