THE CHILDREN'S HOUSE (3 – 6 years )
Even in this age-group “ the demand for independence” is fundamental and in consequence, the environment and classrooms are all structured in relation to the specific needs and requirements of the children who are the principal figures. All material and objects are arranged on low shelving units within easy reach of even the smallest child; the children are free to choose activities that capture their interest and new activities are introduced as each child is ready for them. Individual activities still remain prevalent and are encouraged so as to stimulate the children in their self-directed discovery of the world; also the children are encouraged to develop a love of learning, trust their own ability to learn, and learn from sharing with one another. The child learns to be tidy and to put things in place after use; they learn to respect the work of classmates and share and respect the limits of the community. Also at this age various activities embracing “practical everyday life” are included in the daily routine : preparing the table for lunch, cleaning shoes, washing tables and chairs ….. Using other materials such as scissors, glue, paint-brushes the children can experiment new techniques either individually or in small groups. These activities are specifically designed to help the children develop using all their senses; they cover a broad spectrum that includes practical skills, sensorial, the world of numbers and words, geography, music, nature and botany……. |
